Rather than basically doubling the existing volume resulting in a huge building on the property that would be out of proportion, the addition would have a scale consistent with the existing buildings and landscape. This was accomplished by offsetting the addition with a different "barn-like" aesthetic. A heavy timber structure like for a barn was used. This allowed for the huge main level open space. This structure was exposed thru-out all levels / rooms of the interior. The old stone house was reconfigure as well allowing for larger rooms that again exposed the structure and in this case , the old stone.
